Over a year ago, one of our sophomores was very frustrated and had no idea as to what career would interest him. To make matters worse, his younger brother seemed to know exactly what he wanted to do!

And so the active career exploration process began. The student decided to begin looking into finances. He was intrigued by a chart in a Dave Ramsey book that showed the power of compounding interest. This led to the student doing a project on how a student can open a child’s IRA. In order to complete the project, the student had to interview 3 financial advisors, find a job, and do a presentation on the project. After this project, the student decided to interview a banker. The interview went well and the student decided to continue to pursue banking by doing a shadow day. The student shadowed Tanner Guidry at B1 Bank, downtown Lake Charles. At the same time, the student read Robert Kasoki’s Cash Flow Quadrant, which led to an interest in real estate. After interviewing several real estate investors, watching Real Estate Investors Association videos, and reading several real estate books, he now plans to be a real estate investor. During the 2021-2022 school year, the student plans on pursuing an internship in real estate investing.

INTERNSHIP FACTS: usually Tuesday & Thursday from 9:00 a.m until 3:00 p.m., lasting from several weeks to a year (average 3 months). The student’s focus is on a project that benefits the business as well as promotes the student’s education. Also, the student helps with other tasks at the business. Here are examples of three projects...

  • Cathy really wanted a career where she would be around horses. Because horse training paid so little, Cathay decided to work at a horse-equipment business. She recognized that she really needed to learn more about how to run a business. The business needed a how-to manual showing new employees how to run the accounting software. This became a big part of her learning as well as helping out with sales and running the cash register.

Lucas was interested in video production. He found an internship at Christ Community Church with Sam TTenorio, the worshi;p leader. As part of his internship, Lucas helped every other week in the sound booth. In fact, Sam could not find any workers one Sunday and expressed that he was so thankful that Lucas could step in and take charge of the booth. In addition, Lucas worked on 2 other projects. The first was a weekly project where Lucas filmed and edited video of church members interacting in the church lobby, which then was posted on the church Facebook page. For the second part of the project, Lucas took multiple pictures of children in their bible study classed , produced a video for each class, edited the videos, added background music, and gave the videos to Sam to post on the church website..and then

  • Luther found his internship at Dante’s Kitchen, an upscale cafe. Luther used the scientific method to tweak several of the recipes in order to produce a healthier (yet still tasty) dish by lowering the fat and calories. He used FDA nutrition guidelines and learned dietary software (his teacher helped with this). Next, he cooked the modified recipes, analyzed the results, and modified the dishes. Luthor also prepared and served food at the cafe.

  • Solana found an internship at a physical therapy clinic. Her main project was to develop a pamphlet on fibromyalgia and stress management (the business owner had wanted to develop these educational materials but never found the time).  Solana read articles, interviewed a doctor, developed a printing  budget, and learned PageMaker publishing software in order to complete the pamphlet. She also used the scientific method to hypothesize that torque was increased when you held things (people in this case) closer to your body. After testing, she realized she was wrong! She also attended consultations, helped patients with exercises, did office work, and translated for Spanish patients.
